I found it very useful when I went on a "why not?" trip to Paris ages ago. I listened to the cassette on the flight over and learned enough French to get by for a week, but I'm a slow learner.
The phrase book came in very handy as well - I used it to good effect when I had to go out and buy something or eat at a restaurant.
